Plaster of Paris
Plaster of Paris is a calcium sulfate hemihydrate powder that, when mixed with water, forms a smooth paste which sets rapidly into a rigid, lightweight solid. In surgical and orthopedic settings, it is primarily used to create immobilization casts for fracture management, post-operative support, and correction of deformities. Its excellent molding properties allow precise anatomical contouring, while its exothermic setting reaction provides a controlled hardening process.
When selecting Plaster of Paris for clinical use, consider setting time, compressive strength, and particle consistency. Faster-setting formulations are ideal for emergency splinting, whereas slower-setting variants allow more working time for complex casts. Always verify packaging integrity and storage conditions to ensure optimal performance and patient safety.
